Poem

This poem reminded me of when I was nine and my family and I went India. Specifically to a place called Matheran.  It was an extremely peaceful place, no cars were allowed so the fastest method of travel was on horseback. But since it was four years ago, I only remember two very great things. One is riding on horseback to a place that overlooked all of Matheran at sunrise. And the other memory was sitting outside under a tree, looking at the stars. Those few memories made that trip to India really great.

Fluoride

Some people disapprove of adding fluoride to their drinking water because of many reasons. One is because of the brown stains that occur if the fluoride level is too high. The stains, which made the teeth very unattractive, are one of the reasons people don’t agree with adding fluoride to water. Also, some people say that Fluoride is not an essential nutrient and isn’t necessary for healthy teeth. They give the example of most western European countries, which have not fluoridated their water and have shown the same rate of decay as the teeth of people in the U.S, who have fluoridated water. Finally, fluoride can weaken bone strength so bone is easily broken. It also said to increase the risk of bone cancer in young boys.

I would definitely agree to add Fluoride to drinking water. I say this because the benefits outweigh any drawback. Fluoride has been scientifically proven to prevent tooth decay. It reduces the amount of decay-causing bacteria and it starts to heal those tooth areas where acid attack has already begun. While high levels of Fluoride in the water causes the health problems like bone cancer in young boys, bone weakening, and brown stains on teeth, the Fluoride level can be easily controlled, so the risk level is low.

Some technological advances in toothpaste were made before fluoride could be widely used in many products such as toothpaste and mouthwash. Only 3 compounds of fluoride have been promoted by the FDA, stannous fluoride, sodium fluoride, and sodium monofluorophosphate. To make the fluoride toothpaste, the factory producing it must pair it up with the correct mineral. The first combination which worked, introduced by Procter and Gamble, was when stannous fluoride was paired with calcium pyrophosphate. And while this combination was very good, Ozark Fluorine Specialties, a company which manufactures all three compounds, discovered sodium monofluorophosphate or MFP. By this time fluoridated toothpaste was accepted. And most recent, in 1982, Sodium Fluoride, the most used compound, was discovered. All three help teeth.

The side effect of Fluoride in drinking water that concerns me most is, that high levels of Fluoride can cause bone cancer in young boys. I don’t like this because I’M a young boy and, however unlikely, I do have a risk of bone cancer. Also, the ugly, brown stains on my teeth doesn’t appeal to me that much.
